Abraham and Isaac: Towers of Faith

“Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.” ~Genesis 22:5

These are the instructions Abraham gave his servant before ascending the mountain to sacrifice his only son, Isaac. As a child, I often wrestled with this passage: What kind of God asks a man to take the life of his son? And what kind of man would be willing to do it? The verse above provides an inspiring lesson on faith in the promises of God that answers both questions.

In Hebrews 11:1, Paul writes, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen.” He holds up Abraham as the ultimate example of this conviction. Abraham’s actions that day went far beyond simple obedience to a command; he demonstrated a perfect faith rooted in the promises of God. Having weighed God’s covenant promises against this staggering instruction, Abraham spoke the only outcome that made sense: “We will come back.” He may not have known the how, but he knew the Who. Isaac had to survive, because God’s promise could not be broken.

Faith is a spiritual blessing from God, and He honors those who exercise it. Faithful men glorify God, drawing others to Him. God blesses the faithful with new eyes; while the world operates on the maxim "seeing is believing," in the Kingdom of God, "believing is seeing." Abraham perceived realities hidden from the natural man. He understood that the very act required to preserve his son was the one that would cost him his life. By faith, Isaac would die; by faith, Isaac would live. Abraham didn’t know if God would spare Isaac or raise him from the dead, but he knew Isaac had to live on.

God tested Abraham for our sake—to refine his mettle, revealing to us what he was made of. Abraham proved wise and steadfast; his words to his servant reveal that he had already passed the test before he arrived at the site of sacrifice.

There is, however, another overlooked example of faith in this story. Genesis records: “Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, Isaac spoke up, and said to his father Abraham, ‘Father?’ ‘Yes, my son?’ Abraham replied. ‘The fire and the wood are here,’ Isaac said, ‘but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?’ Abraham answered, ‘God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.’ And the two of them went on together.”

When they arrived and Abraham began to bind Isaac, we see a striking truth. Abraham was an old man, and Isaac was a young man who could have easily resisted or fled, yet he did not. He placed his full trust in his father to the end—a profound shadow of Jesus, who in perfect obedience, willingly submitted to the cross.

Father, thank You for the example of Abraham and Isaac, a beautiful picture of Your own heart in offering Your Son for us. Help us to walk with such unwavering faith, trusting Your promises even when the path is steep and the sacrifice feels great. Let our lives always point others toward the Lamb You have provided, advancing the Gospel for Your glory alone. Amen.
